FAQ.
I've received quite a few emails recently. Many of them involve the same question, so I devote this section to possibly answering those questions. I won't reply to any email about anything covered here.
1. Are you good at Starcraft?
Yes and no. It all depends on my mood and how I feel. I'm not like the people who are always good or always suck. I only play Starcraft for fun and I enjoy sharing my experiences through this page.
2. How come you have this page if you're not that good?
Well, this all comes down to coordination. I have lots of strategies and I learn more from others, but I cannot do anything about coordination. My lowly mouse is a major bottleneck in this area cuz its old and it'll continue to wear down after years of use. Also, I naturally don't have really good coordination abilities. However, I use this page to share my strategies and experiences. This is NOT a place to go to if you really want to find out how to improve coordination. There are basically two solutions to improving coordination if you don't think your coordination can get any better : Either get a new mouse or get some help from a doctor (i'm serious!)
3. Where can I get Multiplayer Hacks for Starcraft?
Go here They got tons of hacks for Starcraft that you can use. In no time, you'll be at the top of the Battle.net ladder!! I cannot be held responsible for anything you do after going there.
4. Why do you have advertising banners? It ain't fair that you're making money.
Yeah, I'm making money from the advertising banners but not as much as you'd expect. If you don't like how I'm making money offa them, they why don't you add them to your own page and make your own money??
5. Most of the MIDIs are uh... outdated. Why do you still have that stuff from 10+ years ago?
I just like that stuff. I like music regardless of if they're 30 years old or just released days ago.
6. Will you join my Starcraft clan?
Thanks, but no thanks. I occasionally get these invitations, and I cannot choose between which clans to join. I don't want to decide randomly, and I don't want to join multiple clans especially if those clans are opposing ones. Also, I got a life outside of Starcraft, so I don't want to minimize the time I spend on this life by joining a clan. =) If I can find the ideal clan that's very warm and friendly and all the players are above average, then I'll consider joining.
7. What computer do you have?
My current computer is kinda old; I got it for $3000 from early 1996. It's a Dell P133 with a 17 inch monitor, 32MB RAM, non-3D video card with 2MB video RAM, 6X CD-ROM, 16bit sound card, 28.8 modem, 6.7 gig total hard drive space, etc. Over the years, I've upgraded the RAM and hard drive, but everything else remained the same from 1996. I plan on getting a new computer before 2000.
8. How do I remove the annoying pop-up windows?
Configure your web browser to disable Javascript. In Netscape Communicator 4, go to Edit --> Preferences --> Advanced --> and deselect "Enable Javascript".
9. What are the cheat codes? Can you post them?
No, I'm not posting the cheat codes. I don't feel like it cuz I rarely use them. When I do use them, I just look them up, and I immediately forget them afterwards.
10. These banner ads are really annoying!!
Then go to www.junkbusters.com and download the program that filters out banner ads. Don't ask me how to set it up. It works for many platforms including Win95/98, MAC, Linux, etc.
11. Yeah, the members.tripod.com server is slow now. But why don't you move to this new server - (insert server name here)??
This server, members.tripod.com, allows people to put banner ads on their personal homepages (not to mention that it's free.) Many other free servers don't allow you to put banner ads. If they do, then they have other severe restrictions (business sites only, very little webspace, very limited montly traffic, limited number of HTML documents allowed, etc.)
12. Starcraft works well with Windows98. Why did you say it doesn't?
I'm just making an assumption based on rumors on many message boards. These rumors are generally supported by logical facts. Some say that if Starcraft doesn't work well on Win98, then it won't work either if you reinstall Win95.
13. What's the point of listing disconnectors?
There is little point to listing the screen names of disconnectors if your point is just to alert others not to play these people. The chances of you meeting anyone on this disconnectors list is very slim. However, this is the only thing I can do that is sorta like getting back at them. However, if Blizzard ever creates a new feature for Starcraft that allows you to create a ban list, then you can just simply copy the contents of a disconnectors list and ammend it to your ban list. People on your ban list won't be able to join any game you create, and if you join their game, a warning will pop up upon joining.
14. Why does you page suck?
Either you have an unusual opinion or you just feel like saying it. If you think it sucks, don't just tell that to me. It does no good. Give me some reasons and provide the URL to a better Starcraft site to compare with. =)
1. What is Battle.net? How come it won't let me play Starcraft when I connect to it via my browser??
Battle.net is a server that is "just there." It merely server a purpose of organizing Internet Starcraft games and keep track of all players including their wins and losses. You connect to it from the Multiplayer portion of Starcraft, not with your web browser!! After you connect, you can join or create a game. When that game starts, little or no traffic goes from the players in the game to Battle.net. Once, I was abruptly disconnected from Battle.net during a game, yet it continued to progress normally.
2. Why is Battle.net so slow??
Slowness on Battle.net can be associated with many factors. If you're using AOL, a freenet ISP, or a really cheap ISP during peek Internet hours (6pm to 12am), then the slowness would be inevitable. However, if your ISP is very fast and Battle.net is slow, then it's just overloaded with 1000s of users. Keep in mind that Battle.net is also used for Diablo.
3. Why does it say that it's searching for the fastest server when I try to connect?
Because it is!! Actually, there are several servers around the world connected with Battle.net. It's taking some time to check which server has the best response time and lowest packet loss.
4. Battle.net refuses to work with AOL. Why??
AOL SUCKS!! Face it. Their Internet connection is very poor and they do not have enough bandwidth for all of its users. If you don't have at least AOL 3.0, then download it from them ASAP.
5. Battle.net works with AOL but there are many problems. How can I fix them??
You probably should go to my Downloads page and get some of those utilities esp. MTUSpeed.
6. I can't connect or barely can connect to Battle.net, and I cannot play any games there. Why??
Make sure you're connecting to the Internet with a 32 bit dialer like Win95's dial-up networking. If you are using a direct connection or 32 bit dialer, then UDP packets on Port 6112 of your ISP are blocked. This is quite common with Universities, Businesses, and some freenets. Basically, all of these offer free Internet access so you probably cannot complain much. Just sign up for a local ISP that you have to pay $$$ for.
If you're using a local ISP, then call them and demand that UDP packets should be allowed on Port 6112. I can't imagine why local ISPs would block out UDP packets. Their customers pay for the Internet access. Some ISP administrators believe that Internet gaming would cause excessive traffic usage and slow things down for the other users. I found that it's not always the case (at least with Starcraft.) From what I saw here, a three player game of Starcraft would effectively download 1 megabyte of data per hour and upload the same amount on my 28.8 modem!!! If someone is downloading a file at full speed on a 28.8, it'll be 10 megabytes per hour. Now THAT's a lot of traffic. If your ISP is reluctant to open Port 6112, then ask them to experiment it temporarily to convince them that Starcraft won't use up too much bandwidth. If they still don't open the Port, then they might just be a bunch of "anti-gaming" outcasts that strongly believe that the Internet should not be used for gaming. If this really is the case, then just leave your ISP and search for another one. Ask this one if they'll open Port 6112 before signing up.
7. What do the green, yellow, and red bars next to the players mean?
All of these give you a general idea of the lag if you get in a game with the player. Green means that the game would barely have any lag. Yellow means slight lag. Red means moderate or much lag.
8. When I try to connect to Battle.net, it says that my CD-Key is in use by another individual!! What should I do??
Stay calm and tell Blizzard about it. Note the date and time of the incident. If everything goes smoothly, then you can get a new CD-Key and the individual using your CD-Key can be sued or jailed. (That individual was probably using an illegal copy of Starcraft.) Don't give out your CD-Key to ANYONE including your friends, brothers, sisters, parents, spouses, wife, hudsband, relatives, etc.!!!!!
